  • Pharma service provider has been securing highly sensitive filling systems with mtu Kinetic PowerPacks since 2005
  • Vetter will have a total of 14 dynamic uninterruptible power supply systems from Rolls-Royce in operation at production sites
  • mtu Kinetic PowerPacks react immediately in the event of a power failure or interruption in the power grid ensuring continuous, high-power quality for sensitive operations

Rolls-Royce has received an order from pharma service provider, Vetter, to deliver an additional three mtu Kinetic PowerPacks (KPP), bringing the total unit count to 14. The systems are designed to ensure a reliable power supply at the company’s sites in Langenargen (Germany) and Rankweil (Austria) and will be used primarily to safeguard operations in the clean rooms, i.e. for the sterile filling of medications. The Langenargen site is receiving two mtu KPPs, each with an output of 2,000 kVA (1600 kWe), and the Rankweil site is receiving one system with an output of 1,750 kVA (1400 kWe). They are expected to be commissioned in mid-2025.

Vetter has been relying on mtu Kinetic PowerPacks since 2005
The pharmaceutical service provider, based in Ravensburg (Germany), has been relying on Rolls-Royce’s dynamic uninterruptible power supply systems (DUPS) since 2005. Nine systems are currently in operation at various company locations, with two more currently being installed. The company, which has production sites in Germany, Austria and the USA, specializes in filling drugs into injection systems. To ensure that this is done completely germ-free, Vetter safeguards its production processes with uninterruptible power supply systems from Rolls-Royce.

mtu Kinetic PowerPacks from Rolls-Royce have proven to be an extremely reliable solution that protects us from significant production losses,” said Uwe Remminghorst, Vice President of Production and Electrical Engineering at Vetter. “Continuous power supply in our clean rooms is of the utmost importance, and we are glad to be able to rely on this technology.”

Dynamic UPS technology provides emergency power and balances grid fluctuations
“Our mtu Kinetic PowerPacks can do more than just provide emergency power in the event of a power outage. They also continuously regulate power quality by compensating for fluctuations, ensuring a stable and reliable power supply for sensitive manufacturing processes,” said Christoph Webinger, head of global sales and service for mtu Kinetic PowerPacks at Rolls-Royce. “That makes them ideal systems for sensitive areas. The good and long-standing cooperation with our customer Vetter is in line with our strategic goal of securing critical infrastructure with our products and providing reliable energy solutions as the backbone of industry”.

mtu Kinetic PowerPacks, manufactured in Liège, Belgium, combine a kinetic energy storage system, an mtu diesel engine and a generator. When the utility grid is operational, the kinetic energy storage device – in this case a flywheel – is driven by the generator, which in this operating mode functions as an electric motor. The heavy kinetic energy storage device serves as an ‘energy battery’ that stores energy and makes it available instantaneously if the power from the main grid fails. In this case, part of the energy stored in the flywheel drives the generator, which then takes over the power supply. Another part of the stored kinetic energy helps to start the mtu diesel engine. Within a very short time, it reaches its rated power and can then take over the power supply via the generator and stabilize the flywheel.
