Tognum receives order for gas turbine plant for Daimler automobile facility

• CHP plant from mtu Onsite Energy to supply electricity for Daimler automobile facility in Sindelfingen
• Additional full maintenance contract agreed

Friedrichshafen, 25 April 2012.  Tognum, the specialist for propulsion and power solutions has just received an order to supply a gas turbine plant. The mtu Onsite Energy brand plant is destined for the Daimler AG automobile facility in Sindelfingen where it will generate additional electricity and processing heat for the production halls. Delivery of the gas turbine plant is scheduled for October of this year. In addition, Tognum and Daimler have signed a long-term, full maintenance contract. The combined value of the orders for the gas turbine plant and the maintenance contract is more than €30 million.

“This order demonstrates the success of our strategy of positioning Tognum as a supplier of combined heat and power plants for international industrial customers,” said Joachim Coers, CEO at Tognum AG. The gas turbine plant from mtu Onsite Energy will be installed in an existing CHP facility at the automobile factory in Sindelfingen which offers potential for retrofitting three other blocks. “The order is also a good example of successful cooperation with our new majority shareholder Daimler and of how the potential for long-term, full maintenance contracts can be utilized in the future,” added Coers.
  
The gas turbine plant, which was produced at the Friedrichshafen location, comes with auxiliary systems such as starting plant and control systems from mtu Onsite Energy. Together with a gas turbine from General Electric the scope of supply includes a gas compressor, a generator and a generator transformer supplied by ABB. The order is rounded off by a long-term full maintenance contract covering 100,000 hours of operation.

In conjunction with the existing CHP plant, the gas turbine will supply electricity for the Daimler automobile facility in Sindelfingen, generating 30 MW of electrical power and 42 MW of thermal energy. That is enough to supply around 45,000 households with electricity and 16,000 households with heat. In the processes of generating electricity and utilizing waste heat from the gas turbine, the CHP system uses over 80% of the input energy enabling the operator to achieve the highest possible energy efficiency.
