Tognum to supply drive units for French Railways

Tognum, the specialist for propulsion and power solutions, has recently won two rail contracts from Siemens and Bombardier for its Business Unit ‘Engines’. The company is to supply a total of 113 Model 16V 4000 R43 rail engines for the state-owned French railways SNCF.

Friedrichshafen, 9 July 2009. Tognum, the specialist for propulsion and power solutions, has recently won two rail contracts from Siemens and Bombardier for its Business Unit ‘Engines’. The company is to supply a total of 113 Model 16V 4000 R43 rail engines for the state-owned French railways SNCF.
The first order is for 68 engine and generator units known as mtu PowerModules, which are earmarked for installation in Type BB 475000 diesel-electric freight locomotives jointly developed by Siemens und Alstom Transport SA. A second order, for 45 mtu engines for its TRAXX F 140 DE diesel-electric locomotive, has been placed by Bombardier Transportation.
Delivery of the drive units for the Siemens locomotives has been underway since the beginning of June 2009 whilst the first engines for Bombardier will leave the plant in December 2009. The vehicles will go into service from 2010, primarily as freight locomotives with the French national railway company SNCF in France and in the French-German cross-border rail network.
mtu’s 16V 4000 R43 rail diesels, which produce 2,400 kW (3,218 bhp), achieve the world’s best power/weight ratio in their class. In order to meet the increased demands of European Emissions Stage IIIa regulations on nitrogen oxide reduction which came into force at the beginning of 2009, these mtu units utilize in-engine technology only. Diesel particulate emissions have also been significantly reduced.
All this means that the biggest French rail operator is able to replace obsolete diesel locomotive series and transport more freight per journey whilst simultaneously improving environmental performance.
