Friedrichshafen / Genoa. Since MTU Friedrichshafen introduced “maritune” at the “Salone Nautico” in Genoa, taking the yacht out on a trip promises to be a lot more dynamic and a lot less complicated for the skipper. This propulsion package with electronic control for surface propeller propulsion systems automatically adjusts the propeller to the optimum depth. As a result, the skipper can concentrate on steering and accelerating his vessel and no longer needs to trim manually. “Automatic trimming, matched to the power of the engines, allows vessels to achieve their optimum acceleration and maneuvering capabilities”, said Rainer Breidenbach, Executive Vice President, Sales & Marketing at MTU Friedrichshafen, explaining a major advantage of the new product.

Complete propulsion system from a single source

As a systems provider, MTU Friedrichshafen supplies complete propulsion plants, including all the hardware from the propulsion control lever to the propeller, as well as the software for controlling the propulsion components. With “maritune”, mtu has extended ship automation by an entire new dimension. The system is compatible with all propulsion plants equipped with mtu Series 2000 or 4000 diesel engines. The automatic trim facility frees the skipper of a burden whilst also allowing full exploitation of the propulsion system’s potential. Speed, coupling and trim can be controlled with a single control lever, guaranteeing optimum performance for acceleration, maneuvering, banking, single shaft operation, reversing or negotiating heavy seas. Engine speed and trim setting are preselected for each control lever position and the software continuously adjusts the settings whilst the vessel is underway.

Plug & play for straightforward installation

The integrated steering function further enhances the auto-trim facility, making hydraulic lines to the bridge or to other control stands superfluous. For trimming and steering, there is now only a single hydraulic unit with an independent pump for each function in the en-gine room. Standardized operator displays on a single monitor screen ensure a clear over-view of the system. All “maritune” automation components are plug & play units designed to guarantee fast and straightforward start-up.

Tried, tested and proven

“Maritune” has proven its capabilities during practical trials on the mtu test vessel Tiziana. On this Mangusta-80 yacht, which is powered by two mtu 16V 2000 Common Rail en-gines, the automatic trimming system reduced acceleration times by between 10 and 30 percent.
On completion of intensive trials, MTU Friedrichshafen will be marketing “maritune” via its global sales and marketing network during the coming year.
