The introduction of the Series 60 Tier 3 off-highway engine is on schedule with plans to begin full production in January 2005 as mandated by the new EPA standards. While emissions changeover years are sometimes approached with caution, 2005 appears to be quite different for Detroit Diesel and the industry-leading Series 60 engine. The latest version of the Series 60 meets the required emissions standards and offers many advantages over previous models.

According to George Polson, vice president of application engineering for the Detroit Diesel off-highway business, "The Tier 3 Series 60 engine is a blend of 16 years of field experience with simple, proven technology and environmentally friendly features. In fact, the new Series 60 offers many advantages for our customers."

To meet Tier 3, Detroit Diesel is using the same basic engine configuration as the Tier 2 Series 60, with no need for EGR or aftertreatment. The Tier 3 Series 60 is the 14-liter model, which offers common engine hardware from 300-665 hp. Customers using the 12.7 liter Series 60 engines now have a more robust 14-liter engine at the same ratings. Enhancements have made to the combustion, air handling, and electronic systems to effect these changes. The oil drain interval remains unchanged.

The Tier 3 Series 60 will be equipped with Detroit Diesel's latest version of the industry leading DDEC electronic control system, DDEC 5. This latest evolution in electronics offers increased capacity, memory, and capability. Specifically, there are numerous additional inputs/outputs which offer greater flexibility for the most sophisticated off-highway applications. DDEC 5 is also used on all Series 60 on-highway engines, the most popular heavy-duty engine in North America..

Scott Jenkins, vice president - Construction & Industrial Sales said, "We are able to offer an environmentally friendly product that at the same time has numerous advantages for our customers. The Tier 3 Series 60 uses both proven and very up to date technology, a faster and smarter electronics packages, common engine hardware from bottom to top, and all the attributes that have made the Series 60 the most respected heavy duty engine in the industry."
