Tognum to supply emergency gensets for NPP Unterweser

• Order to include two mtu Onsite Energy emergency gensets

Friedrichshafen, 21 July 2009. The propulsion and power solutions specialist Tognum will supply two emergency gensets for the Unterweser nuclear power plant in early 2011. The contract recently awarded by Eon Kernkraft GmbH has a volume of € 11.25 million. In the next few years, the replacement of emergency power systems in several German nuclear power plants is coming up; this also includes the NPP Unterweser which requires additional new emergency gensets. The strategic significance of this order for possible follow-up orders is enormous.

Both emergency gensets are based on the mtu 16V 956 TB 33 engine and have a joint electric power output of 9,400kW. This equals the energy consumption of a small German town with a population of about 10.000. Following the start signal, it takes the gensets less than 10 seconds to reach their operating speed so that electrical power can be generated; after not more than 15 seconds, they accept full load. At the NPP Unterweser, they will supply safety-relevant consumers with energy in case of power failure.

The premium emergency gensets of mtu Onsite Energy fulfill, among other items, the stringent requirements of the German Nuclear Safety Standards Commission (KTA) for the operation of emergency power systems in nuclear power plants. This proof of operational reliability and safety had to be demonstrated in extensive trials under the supervision of Germanischer Lloyd. What makes the gensets stand out in the first place is their exceptional reliability. Tognum is one of four providers worldwide whose emergency gensets are approved for operation in nuclear power plants.

For more than thirty years, several mtu emergency gensets have been in operation at the NPP Unterweser. As part of an extensive repowering program, Eon will first integrate new emergency power systems. To this effect, Tognum was awarded the contract for the two mtu Onsite Energy 16V 956 TB 33 gensets. The specialist for propulsion and power solutions scored primarily with the excellent quality of its gensets as requested by the customer and the great expertise of its engineering personnel. The contract for two additional, smaller gensets is yet to be awarded.

"With its emergency gensets, Tognum contributes essentially to the safety of nuclear power plants, not only in Germany but also in China, for example, as our recent successes show", explained Christof von Branconi, member of the executive board of Tognum AG and responsible for the business unit "Onsite Energy & Components". Only a few months ago, the Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen, as part of a consortium, had sold emergency power systems with a total value of about € 150 million to Chinese nuclear power plants. "In our strategy to expand our business with decentralized power generation systems, emergency gensets for nuclear power plants represent an important mainstay", added von Branconi.
