Friedrichshafen, 5 November 2008. The Tognum business unit Engines has been awarded a contract by Bombardier covering the development and manufacture of more than 93 rail drive systems. The Powerpacks traded under Tognum’s brand mtu will be installed in Bombardier´s new type “Class 172” railcars from early 2009 until mid-2010. All the “Class 172” trains are furnished with two or three railcars; each railcar will be powered by an mtu Powerpack. Final customers to receive these railcars comprise various rail operators in Great Britain.

The mtu Powerpacks consist of the actual engine and other components such as the gearbox, cooling and filter systems. They are based on the engine model 6H 1800, with a power output of 360 kW, which complies with the stringent limits of the EU guideline Stage IIIA. “This order demonstrates quite clearly: we do not just build engines, but we are a competent provider of complete and tailored systems“, explains Rainer Breidenbach, Member of the Executive Board of Tognum AG with responsibility for the business unit Engines.

Bombardier made the decision to opt for mtu Powerpacks following a successful test operation phase of several thousand hours. Main benefits of the 39 new “Class 172“ trains furnished with mtu drive systems include higher acceleration, in combination with excellent reliability. Since 2006, approximately 650 mtu Powerpacks complying with emission Stage IIIA have been delivered to various vehicle manufacturers in Europe and Asia.
