FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, GERMANY – Rolls-Royce Power Systems brand mtu has again assumed its mantle as a major promoter of the Formula Student Germany event and is likewise sponsoring a special award for ‘Most Innovative Power Train’. The international design competition for students will take place from 28 July to 2 August at the Hockenheimring. mtu will also be sponsoring seven university teams charged with the task of building their own racing cars which they will then present at Formula Student events in Europe and the USA. The students will receive financial support as well as components for their vehicles and several company employees will be acting as judges for the Formula Student Germany event. mtu is part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems in the Land & Sea Division of Rolls-Royce.
“Our interest in this event reflects our long-term commitment to promoting contacts with keen engineering students who are interested in taking up internships, completing diploma projects or embarking on a professional career in the sector when they complete their studies. For us, the commitment is a sustainable investment in qualified and dedicated upcoming engineers,” said Ingo Metzer, Vice President, Human Resources at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.
“The experience we gain from taking part in this project is unique,” said Tim Fritz of Global Formula Racing in Friedrichshafen. “It not only allows us to develop and build racing cars—but also to maintain contact with our sponsors and gain an insight into individual companies whilst also profiting, for example, from mtu’s manufacturing expertise.”
mtu sponsors the Global Formula Racing Team from the Cooperative State University of Baden-Württemberg in Ravensburg, the Formula Student Team Weingarten from the Ravensburg-Weingarten University, KARacing from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, TUfast from the Technical University of Munich, High Octane from the Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen-Nuremberg, the University of Stuttgart Racing Team and the Lions Racing Team from the Technical University of Braunschweig.
This year, 75 racing cars powered by conventional combustion engines will take part in Formula Student Germany and there will be 40 teams entering vehicles powered by electricity. As always, speed alone will not be enough to gain victory. The winner at the Formula Student event will be the team that achieves the best overall results in terms of design, racing performance, financial planning and sales strategy. This year, the event celebrates its tenth anniversary in Germany. The Formula Student event originated in the USA.
