WORLDWIDE START FOR APPRENTICES AT ROLLS-ROYCE POWER SYSTEMS

159 young people will be taking up an apprenticeship or embarking on courses of dual study at Rolls-Royce Power Systems and its subsidiaries this September, including Mankato in the USA for the first time.

- Two apprentices at the mtu Onsite Energy Corporation in Mankato for the first time
159 young people will be taking up an apprenticeship or embarking on courses of dual study at Rolls-Royce Power Systems and its subsidiaries this September, including Mankato in the USA for the first time. “As a technology leader, we need to qualify apprentices all over the world. These young people enable us to produce competitive, quality engines and power systems”, explains Jörg Schwitalla, Member of the Executive Board responsible for HR, Integrity and Operations at Rolls-Royce Power Systems. “We offer motivated young adults excellent training opportunities and look forward to accompanying them on the first leg of their professional lives”, adds Thomas Bittelmeyer, Chairman of the Works Council.
Come September 8, 76 school graduates will be taking up an apprenticeship and 32 high-school graduates starting off on an dual study program in Friedrichshafen. For the first time, one student will be focusing on social and healthcare case management with mtu's company health insurance organization. “Health insurance is becoming an increasingly complex matter and demands real expertise. We want to position ourselves to face the healthcare challenges of the future by having expert personnel on board with us”, explains Roland Dietz, Head of Company Health Insurance (BKK) at mtu. Most of the training schemes focus on technical occupations: 36 industrial mechanics make up the largest group of apprentices while 13 students decided on a degree in mechanical engineering.
The dual study program turned out to be a hit in the USA as well. For the first time, the mtu Onsite Energy Corporation in Mankato, Minnesota will be educating two young students on the basis of the German training model, in cooperation with Mankato Area Public Schools and South Central College. “Training young talent is our responsibility if we want to continue to meet demand and pioneer new technologies,” said Todd Riemann, CEO of the mtu Onsite Energy Corporation. The company is one of three in Mankato participating in the new Youth Education Acceleration Program (YEAP).
A third generation totaling six apprentices is also starting at mtu America in Aiken, South Carolina. All of them will be learning the ropes as industrial mechanics. Already in August, 14 trainees started on technical training programs at Bergen Engines in Norway. Additional two trainees at Bergen Engines are embarking on a four-year course of studies similar to the integrated degree program in Germany.
At the beginning of September, 13 industrial mechanic and precision metalworking trainees took up posts at the injection system specialist L’Orange in Glatten. MTU Reman Technologies in Magdeburg is training up two industrial mechanics, two milling center mechanics and one mechatronics technician. Four young people started out at mtu Onsite Energy Gas Power Systems in Augsburg at the end of August, with another five new trainees setting forth at mtu Onsite Energy Systems GmbH in Ruhstorf.
