PowerGen 2002: mtu introduces new 18V 2000 Genset application

Milan - MTU Friedrichshafen has expanded its 2000 series with a new 18 cylinder variant. The 18V 2000 is specially designed for the generator set market. It is conceived for deployment in continuous power, prime power and emergency standby power gensets. The engine is suitable for 50 and 60 hertz applications and covers a range from 720 to 1250 kilowatt. In particular, the 18V 2000 cost-effectively covers the frequently demanded power rating 1000 kVA prime power (peak current and applications that require a ten percent overload capacity).

Flexible, adaptable and cost-effective


The 18V 2000 is available in three different versions: as a 50 hertz engine with 1500 rpm, as a 60 hertz engine with 1800 rpm and in a switchable version, which - regulated through the speed - can be set at both 50 and 60 hertz. The power range of the 50 hertz engine is between 720 kW and 985 kW and of the 60 hertz engine between 900 kW and 1250 kW.

The engine can be adjusted to optimize fuel saving or optimize emission reduction according to the client's requirements. The engine is also available with different charge air cooling systems, either air-cooled or water-cooled. With a ventilation cooler at the front the engine is particularly compact. The water cooling system, however, has the advantage that the cooler can be assembled at a separate location.

The new 18V 2000 offers very cost-effective operation. Optimum fuel consumption is under 196 g/kWh, at maximum load it is 198 g/kWh. Also when complying with the limits of the German Clean Air Act the engine only consumes 215 g/kWh, which, compared to the competition, is a very good figure. The 60 hertz engines fulfill all performance requirements of the EPA regulations. Thanks to the special construction of the combustion chamber, oil consumption was reduced to below 0.2 g/kWh.

Proven engine concept


The 18V 2000 is based, as are all other engines of the 2000 series, on the DaimlerChrysler OM 500 series. The piston is a single-unit aluminum piston equipped with two sealing rings and an oil control ring. A coke control ring set in the cylinder liner prevents wearing coke deposits on the piston. Thus a long lifespan of cylinder liners and pistons is achieved.

The injection pumps (pumps-line-nozzles) are electronically controlled by the MDEC system (mtu Diesel Engine Control). This control can be programmed according to whether emissions or fuel consumption should be optimized. The injection pumps are designed as so called accumulator pumps with a storage capacity on the low-pressure side of the fuel system. This storage capacity compensates for pressure pulsations in the low-pressure side of the fuel system. Therefore accumulator pumps have a stable filling performance that excludes fluctuations in the injection volume.
