First 1650 Horsepower EuroPowerPack delivered

• Enhanced Version of Euro PowerPack in Leopard 2

Paris - The first prototype of the enhanced version of the EuroPowerPack (EPP) has been installed in the Leopard 2 and has successfully completed trials.

The MT883 engine of mtu as a major component of the EuroPowerPack is a drive system that has been developed for the third generation of heavy armored vehicles. The enhanced version of the EuroPowerPack is further developed to deliver 1210 kW (1650 mHp) at 3000 rpm with a maximum torque of 5000 Nm at 2000 rpm. This means a 10 % increase in power output and torque compared to the "standard" EuroPowerPack.

Besides the integration of the common rail direct injection technology, additional improvements such as a stiffer engine block, automated valve clearance, fully digitized and MIL-standard qualified electronics, have been realized in the enhanced version.

This EuroPowerPack is almost 1000 mm shorter than the original Leopard 2 propulsion unit. Thanks to its smaller installation dimensions, there is a free space of approximately three cubic meters which can be used for additional fuel tanks, ammunition storage or an automatic loader.

The EuroPowerPack will allow the Leopard 2 to accelerate faster. Additionally, the specific fuel consumption will drop by around 15 %. In the Vickers Challenger 2E, the installed EuroPowerPack gains a space of more than 1.7 cubic meters compared to the original propulsion unit.

The EuroPowerPack is designed as a rear drive unit, the MT883 engine being combined with the RENK HSWL 295 TM transmission. Power is transmitted to the gearbox, which is mounted parallel to the engine, by means of a transfer gearbox.
