Johannesburg - mtu South Africa, the subsidiary of the German engine manufacturer mtu, has launched a regional training school, located at the recently expanded Johannesburg premises. At a function hosted by Dr. Wolfgang Heizmann, Managing Director of mtu-SA, he emphasized that the role of the training school is aimed at increasing the product and service knowledge amongst regional distributors, customers, customer's staff members, dealers and end-users of mtu and Detroit Diesels' large range of industrial engines, as well as Detroit Diesel on-highway applications. Among the guests at the function were representatives of OEM's , Regional Distributors and Dealers, as well as members of DaimlerChrysler SA.

Mr. Fanie van Wyk was selected by mtu to head up the training school. During his own training time in the German head quarters Mr. van Wyk acquired expertise in the latest technology in propulsion and drive systems and is well versed in the broad range of applications and workings of the mtu product program. Van Wyk comments: "These engines are used in a variety of different industries, including mining, construction & industrial, marine and others. With our new training school we want to impart in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge to the people who work with these engines, in their specific applications. This will enable them to maximise their usage of the products and take full advantage of all the benefits that our engines have to offer."

Trainees at the school will benefit from the latest in training technology too. No corners have been cut in ensuring the best for the learners. The school is well equipped with audiovisual equipment in a spacious lecture room, as well as a self-contained workshop for practical demonstrations and hands-on experience for the trainees. The training school will offer product and service training to the entire sub-Saharan region.

In addition to the new training school, mtu SA has further increased its capabilities by doubling the size of the Johannesburg operation by acquiring the adjacent property's offices and warehouse. The additional 1,100 square meters workshop will accommodate a 'small engine' remanufacturing facility focusing on the S40, S50, S60, VM applications and Mercedes Benz truck engines. Included as part of this expansion was an additional test centre with two dynamometers capable of testing engines up to 500hp & 1000hp respectively. This additional test centre will give mtu-SA the capabilities to test the entire product range from the 45hp air cooled VM Motori sun2105 right up to the 2,700hp 16V4000 engine.
