Friedrichshafen/Oslo, 24 May 2011. A mtu genset for diesel-electric propulsion and on-board power generation is the centerpiece at the joint booth of MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH and its Norwegian distributor Bertel O. Steen Teknikk AS (booth: E04-12) at this year’s Nor-Shipping trade show held in Oslo from 24 to 27 May 2011. It is designed specifically for commercial marine applications, such as offshore supply vessels for wind parks or oil and gas platforms.

The genset family consists of a workboat engine taken from the proven mtu Series 4000 “Ironmen”, with a choice of 8, 12 or 16 cylinders, a generator and electronic control system from mtu mounted on a rigid base frame and covers a power range from 760 to 2,240 kW, on request also power outputs of up to 3,000 kW can be configured. With the aid of an advanced power management system, the gensets work at the optimal operating point whatever is required of them. Flexible load distribution enables the fuel consumption to be reduced and the service life of the propulsion system increased. The genset also features a compact size and excellent load imposition characteristics and meets the provisions of all the current emission guidelines. Thanks to standardized mtu basic components meeting highest quality standards, spare parts supply and maintenance can be ensured world-wide with runtimes as long as 33,000 hours before the first overhaul. The genset maintenance is tailored to the customer’s requirements and thus ensures minimum downtimes and maximum availability – key to efficient operation. Engine control and monitoring is via the mtu “Genoline” automation system designed for gensets used in commercial shipping.
