Tognum supplies gas turbine plant

• Power and heat for the German city Halle
• Strengthening of mtu Onsite Energy systems business

Friedrichshafen, 31 March 2010. The specialist for propulsion and power solutions Tognum has won an order for the biggest gas turbine cogeneration power plant to be built by mtu Onsite Energy to date. The end user of the plant sold by Tognum subsidiary mtu  Friedrichshafen GmbH will be Heizkraftwerk Halle-Trotha GmbH, who operates combined heat and power plants. Tognum is to deliver the mtu  Onsite Energy brand plant in May 2011 with commissioning to start in September 2011 and commercial operation scheduled from April 2012. “This order allows Tognum to demonstrate its systems expertise in the field of individual project engineering for complex power plants”, said Christof von Branconi, member of the executive board of Tognum  AG with responsibility for the business unit Onsite Energy & Components.

Along with the gas turbine, the scope of supply also includes gearbox, generator and air supply systems as well as control plant. Tognum has specifically designed the new gas turbine plant to fit into the specified building’s infrastructure and will be taking care of installation, commissioning and maintenance. “The choice was whether to overhaul the existing turbine or find a new solution”, explained Prof. Dr. Matthias Krause, CEO of Heizkraftwerk Halle-Trotha GmbH. “We didn’t simply want a replacement for the old gas turbine. We were looking for an alternative which would give us greater flexibility in reacting to the demands of the market for power and heat. In this field, mtu  Friedrichshafen is a tried and trusted partner with whom we are glad to cooperate.”

Powered by a type LM6000 PF Sprint gas turbine from General Electric, the CHP plant will use environmentally friendly technology to generate 50 MW of electrical power and 50 MW of thermal power extremely effectively at overall efficiency rates of up to 85 percent. The new, modernized power plant can supply heat to help meet the city’s demands or it can exclusively generate electricity to meet peak and medium demand during transitional periods and the summer months. The electricity generated will be fed into the general power grid whilst the thermal energy will be used to generate steam in a downstream waste heat boiler before being routed to two different applications. Part of the steam will be converted to around 15 MW of electricity in a steam turbine and fed into the general grid whilst the remainder will be routed into the centrally-generated heating grid.

Heizkraftwerk Halle-Trotha GmbH is a joint venture between Verbundnetz Gas AG (VNG) company and Stadtwerke Halle GmbH (municipal utility company). Stadtwerke Halle GmbH already purchased two gas turbine plants from Tognum in 2005 and these are now in operation in the city.
