  • Successful test run confirms compliance with latest EU exhaust emissions limits
  • mtu Series 4000 rail engines awarded exhaust certification
  • Stringent EU Stage IIIA emissions limits met using exclusively in-engine technology

Friedrichshafen, 25 July 2008. The German Federal Motor Vehicle Authority (Kraftfahrtbundesamt) has awarded mtu Series 4000 R43 rail engines EU Type Approval to verify compliance with stringent exhaust emissions standards. Approval covers 8V, 12V, 16V and 20V cylinder configurations with a performance range from 1,200 to 3,000 kW.

The new rail engines use exclusively in-engine technology, with no additional exhaust after-treatment, to meet EU Stage IIIA emissions specifications on nitrogen oxides (NOx) and soot particulate. As the ‘parent’ engine for the Series, the 20V 4000 R43 not only meets the limits for NOx and particulate (6.0 and 0.2 g/kWh respectively) but also achieves low consumption levels. Among the technologies used to achieve this are common rail injection and the Miller Process which employs increased charge-air pressure and involves closing the inlet valves earlier than normal during the combustion process. This results in lower combustion temperatures and consequently to reduced engine NOx emissions. Compliance with the limits was checked and verified by technical inspection and control supervisors.
