The compact 20V 4000 engine gives locomotive manufacturers new options for building even faster and more powerful 4-axle locomotives for cross-border traffic. mtu has already achieved initial success with this engine. For example, in 2004, the German locomotive manufacturer Vossloh Locomotives GmbH installed a 2700 kW engine in two prototypes of the new MaK 2000 locomotive series, thus increasing the performance of the locomotive by 20% compared with its predecessor, the G 2000 BB. A soot particulate trap system, by the Swiss company HUG, has been installed in one of the two prototypes. The separation efficiency is above 95% without impinging on engine or locomotive performance. The two locomotives are undergoing intensive testing.

Market Leader in Europe

In the lower power output range of the 4000 series, mtu supplies the 1000 kW 8V 4000. It is the standard drive system for models including the MaK 1000 diesel-hydraulic multi-purpose locomotive, with which Vossloh is the European market leader in this power output segment. In addition to the low noise and exhaust emissions, one of the main advantages of the locomotive is its modular design, which enables a wide variety of variants in terms of power output and equipment. The robust, functional design ensures a high level of availability and a long service life combined with low lifecycle costs. As the locomotive is fitted with all the essential means of communication such as train and marshalling yard radio systems, it is suitable for shunting and mainline service.

8V 4000 Engine for the Cleanest Shunter Locomotive in the World

Since fall 2002, Deutsche Bahn has been modernizing its most important shunter with the V290. 398 vehicles in total, which pull up to 2000-ton trains, are being repowered with a 1000 kW 8V 4000 engine. This engine is in conformity with the emission guidelines valid until 2008. With the V290, a locomotive is now on the tracks that points the way for diesel-powered rail traffic as a whole.
