Anatomy of an mtu EnergyPack QG

The integration of a high level of solar and wind renewables in power systems can be achieved effectively with the help of the  mtu  EnergyPack QG, which comprises five essential components: battery rack, a power conversion system (PCS), a medium voltage skid, an auxiliary power transformer with sub-distribution cabinet, and the  mtu  EnergetIQ Asset Controller.

Battery rack

Source of energy which can be charged or discharged via electro-chemical reaction. Structured system including lithium-ion cells, cooling, wiring, asset controller and housing.

Power Conversion System (PCS)

Converts the stored energy into the appropriate form for use by the connected load.

MV Transformer & Switchgear

Manages the distribution of energy to the connected load.

Auxiliary Power Transformer with Sub Distribution Cabinet

Provides additional power to support the operation of the EnergyPack QG and distributes power to other components as needed.

A comprehensive plant design comprises multiple base units, including the two distinct variants depicted. Each base unit is optimized for 3.7 - 8.8 MVA nominal charge and discharge power, with a capacity of up to 32.6 MWh.

Integrated within each battery rack or container are control systems, fire suppression mechanisms, and liquid cooling and heating systems. These standalone operational units, with their modular design, allow for easy replacement in the event of failure, ensuring dependable operation and maximum availability of energy storage capacity.

Unlimited scalability meets project-specific requirements

The mtu EnergyPack QG is a battery energy storage system that can be scaled infinitely to fulfill specific project needs, rendering it an optimal choice for large-scale grid applications.

Versatile solution for various applications

The mtu EnergyPack's industrial design is crafted for the most challenging applications. The system offers high configurability to meet your operational needs and can be scaled with demand to maximize asset value cost-effectively.

Energy Shifting

The mtu EnergyPack stores excess energy from PV systems or other generation sources in the grid for later use (e.g., peak shaving, load shifting).

Energy Trading

When paired with the mtu EnergetIQ Manager, the system allows for participation in high-level electricity markets ahead of the electric metering point. In deregulated electricity markets, revenues can be earned by trading in wholesale markets, including day-ahead and intraday markets.

Frequency Regulation

Our solution continuously monitors the grid, ensuring an immediate active and reactive balance between load and generation to stabilize the network's frequency (ancillary services).

Reactive Power and Voltage Regulation

The power electronics in the mtu EnergyPack contribute to grid voltage regulation and provide reactive power support to the network.

Performance Optimization

Combining these functionalities allows for the integration of large amounts of renewable energy, reduces the cost of conventional energy generation systems, and delivers high-quality, reliable power in on-grid applications.

Transmission and Distribution Support

Grid-scale energy storage solutions provide sufficient capacity to defer or eliminate the need for grid infrastructure upgrades, enabling effective grid congestion management.
