Rolls-Royce (LSE: RR., ADR: RYCEY) has received Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification for its new mtu Gas PowerPack, a 2.6 MW natural gas-powered, mobile power system for use by the oil and gas industry that can significantly reduce CO2 emissions while providing continuous duty, 100% capacity power. The system is certified to EPA Tier 2 spark ignition standards for natural gas engines.

As a pioneer in creating more sustainable, efficient power solutions for the oil and gas industry, Rolls-Royce’s latest offering features its proven mtu 20V 4000 L64 FNER gas engine at its core and provides the highest efficiency solution for mobile applications. Its reliable, powerful, cost-effective characteristics make it a perfect solution for oil & gas customers looking to reduce emissions without sacrificing performance.

Petar Pelemis, Vice President, Stationary Engine & System Development, Rolls-Royce Power Systems, said: “The new mtu Gas PowerPack is our latest innovation for supporting our customers in the oil & gas industry with power solutions that help them achieve their business and ESG targets. Its development is thanks to our dedicated oil and gas team, whose knowledge of the market requirements and future-focused view helps us develop low emissions, robust and smart technologies that maximize efficiency and uptime.

“Creating a continuous natural gas-powered mobile solution was a top priority for Rolls-Royce, and its development was also instrumental in laying the groundwork for future gas product development.”

The mtu Gas PowerPack offers operators the ability to take advantage of low-cost and abundant natural gas available at the drilling site. It is also able to run on a blend of natural gas and hydrogen, which further reduces emissions.

The modularity of the system provides many opportunities, such as in hybrid configurations for pressure pumping and drilling. Any combination of mtu Gas PowerPacks and mtu EnergyPack battery systems can be mixed and matched, allowing customers to tailor their operational needs based on the load requirements of a specific site. This allows the power to be utilized more efficiently.

The system is available now for ordering, and many units are already in use at customer sites throughout the U.S. According to Scott Woodruff, Vice President, Global Oil & Gas Business, the operational feedback is excellent and continues to support the demand for efficient, robust natural gas-powered solutions.

“The demand for our new mtu Gas PowerPack is exceptional and continues to grow even outside of North America,” said Woodruff. “The success of this offering has also enabled further offerings within the same platform. The Series 4000 natural gas platform is future-ready and can be retrofitted for use with new technologies as market conditions demand.”
