“Veloce” is Italian for “fast”. Dutch yacht builder Vanquish could not have given its new 35-meter yacht a more fitting name – because it is set to become the world's fastest aluminum yacht in its category.
Normally, yachts of this size can manage an average maximum speed of 35 – 45 knots. But not Veloce, whose three mtu 16V2000M96L engines will each deliver 1,939 kW (2,600 PS) of oomph to power the yacht to well over 50 knots (93 km per hour). This will make her the fastest diesel-powered aluminum yacht over 30 meters in length. How that works? Veloce has a so-called surface drive. Here, the propeller is only half under water and its inclination is adjustable. This reduces water resistance - and increases speed.
Erik van Prooijen, Project Manager at Vanquish Yachts, affectionately refers to the yacht as a “speed machine”.
