Tognum wins another major order from China for emergency power supply gensets

• mtu consortium to supply four emergency power supply gensets to Chinese nuclear power plants for overall output of 24 megawatts
• Order volume for consortium worth around 26 million euros
• Good strategic position in growing market

Friedrichshafen, 17 January 2011. The specialist for propulsion and power solutions Tognum has won yet another order for supplying top-safety emergency power supply gensets to two Chinese nuclear power plants. A consortium led by Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH is to furnish the nuclear power plants currently being built in Fuqing, south-east China, with four emergency power supply gensets certified to class 1E safety. The order value of the systems, including electronic control plant and peripherals, is worth 26 million euros to the consortium. Delivery to the customer is scheduled for December 2012 and August 2013.
In the consortium, mtu is playing a key role in developing and engineering the emergency power plant as a whole. The consortium comprises the joint venture company Shanxi North MTU Diesel Co. Ltd. (SNMD) – a joint undertaking formed by mtu and the Chinese Norinco Group – and AREVA, one of the world’s leading nuclear energy companies and a consortium partner of mtu. The consortium has positioned itself favorably in China’s emergency genset market for nuclear power plants and there is good potential for further orders. Over the next ten years, two to three nuclear power plants per year are to be constructed and commissioned in China.

"Our Chinese partner assists us in securing local content in China so that we can make the very best of the opportunities presented by its growing market for distributed energy generation." SNMD assembles and tests components in the Datong facility opened in September 2010. On the present project, the local content for China amounts to about 50 percent, the rest being delivered from Germany.
Since 2001, Tognum has supplied over 20 emergency power supply gensets carrying the mtu Onsite Energy brand to Chinese nuclear power plants. These are based on 20V 956 TB33 diesel engines with rated outputs of 6,000 kilowatts. In the event of a power outage, the emergency power supply gensets are able to ramp up to full rpm speed within just ten seconds to feed power to all safety-relevant consumers.
