Tognum awarded contract for fourth National Security Cutter (NSC)

The specialist for propulsion and power solutions Tognum further proved its position as the engine supplier of choice for the U.S. Coast Guard’s Deepwater program. Tognum’s subsidiary mtu was awarded a contract of just under $35 million to provide the complete propulsion system for the fourth NSC vessel.

Pascagoula, Miss. (Dec. 4, 2007) --Sea trials began this week for the Bertholf, the U.S. Coast Guard's first National Security Cutter. The Bertholf, the Coast Guard's largest multi-mission cutter, sailed from Northrop Grumman shipyard docks into the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday. Friedrichshafen/Detroit, 18 December 2008. The specialist for propulsion and power solutions Tognum further proved its position as the engine supplier of choice for the U.S. Coast Guard’s Deepwater program. Tognum’s subsidiary mtu was awarded a contract of just under $35 million to provide the complete propulsion system for the fourth NSC vessel.

This current contract follows mtu’s selection as the propulsion plant single source vendor for the Bertholf, the Waesche and the Stratton, the first three of eight planned NSCs. Each will be outfitted with a combined diesel and gas turbine propulsion plant including twin 20V 1163 engines rated at 7,400 kW (9,925 bhp) and one GE LM2500 gas turbine rated at 22,000 kW (29,500 bhp), as well as an mtu propulsion control and monitoring system, a cross-connected reduction gear system and two controllable/reversible pitch propeller systems. This scope of supply underlines mtu’s system competence to integrate all vital propulsion components inclusive the automation systems.

In addition to the Deepwater NSC, mtu has an extensive resume with the U.S. Coast Guard including a fleet of 104 Motor Life Boats and a fleet of 74 Coastal Patrol Boats.

The first of the NSCs, Bertholf, was commissioned on August 8, 2008, marking a significant milestone in its transition to full operational status in the Coast Guard’s fleet.
