At Power Gen Europe in Milan from June 28 to 30, 2005, MTU Friedrichshafen is presenting an overview of its broad product range of from genset engines, via rapidly deployable complete components to sophisticated systems technology. The mtu supply program covers a power output range of 20 to 2.800 kW el with 60-Hertz applications. With applications in the 50-Hertz range, the offer goes to 6.250 kW el. In 2004, around 3,800 engines were delivered to mtu customers and are now being used in energy systems all over the world. Also on show at the fair is the 16V 4000 gas engine. The engine was designed on the basis of the diesel engine 4000 series. It generates 1.600 kW (2.145 bhp) at 1500 rpm in the 50-Hertz configuration.

Engine supplier for OEMs

mtu engines are in use in a wide variety of energy systems around the world. Engines of the 396, 2000, 4000 and 60 series are available to OEMs.The 20V 4000 with a performance of 3.010 kW is considered as the world’s most powerful engine and can be used not only for 50-Hertz, but also 60-Hertz applications. With a power-weight ratio of only 3.1 kg/kW, it is ideal for rooftop installations. Furthermore, the exhaust gas-optimized version meets current emissions regulations. The mtu 2000 series covers the frequently demanded performance range of 565 to 1.250 kW. It can be used for applications with diesel engine generator operations, such as container installations, standby generator sets, continuous power and UPS systems.

Broad spectrum of complete components

At its stand at the fair in Milan, MTU Friedrichshafen is also presenting a complete PowerDriveUnit with a series 60 engine as well as a component from VM Motori and a component with a 12V 2000 engine. These complete components can be used for a wide range of applications. As all the components are extensively tested and qualified by mtu, the customer receives a component that can be utilized immediately. The PowerDriveUnit (PDU®), sold under the Detroit Diesel brand, generates mechanical energy and its applications therefore include pumps, air compressors, agricultural or forestry machines such as choppers, hackers and sorting machines. Depending on the application, the compact components are equipped with series 60, 700 or SUN engines and, depending on requirements, delivers a performance of 20 to 470 kW (25 to 630 PS) at 50 or 60 Hz.

With the VIRTUS program, mtu supplies a complete component equipped with series 2000 or 4000 engines, covering a performance range between 630 and 2.200 kVA. The drives are characterized by a low sound and vibration level, low fuel consumption and simple maintenance. Furthermore, they satisfy international emissions standards. The VIRTUS component is also available as a container component for a wide variety of applications. Container systems are a technically and economically interesting alternative to traditional, stationary systems as the total investment costs are lower. A special area of application is mobile deployment where it is necessary to transport the container component from one area of service to the next, so that an immediate power supply is guaranteed at the new location.

Customized systems from a single source

mtu also offers customized system solutions, precisely tailored to customers' requirements, the special area of service and the individual environment. Its areas of application include use as a standby generator set or for peak load provision in clinics or public utilities, as well as rapid and no break stand-by generating sets for interruption-critical installations, such as airport runway beaconing or in data processing centers. Here the customer benefit from the experience and technical expertise of the mtu system engineers and receive precisely customized, state-of-the-art technology from a single source.
